All aboard and ship ahoy!

Crystal Symphony left Korcula at 11pm last night for a short sailing to Dubrovnik but that is only half the story. A massive and thunderous storm whipped through the area during dinner hours that left us speechless. Mother Nature served up her own version of fire works (the ship had planned a display for 10pm) with massive lighting from all directions. Needless to say, the ship kept its powder dry as it rained all night.

Before I continue with the itinerary and our day in Dubrovnik in tomorrow’s blog, let me answer the question I got the most from readers.
What is the experience aboard like? Does it live up to the lore of crystal’s reputation?

The short answer is yes with a few caveats which I will explore in more detail in this blog.

Old is new again…when it comes to the suites onboard. I am pleased to report that in two accommodations categories, guests can now choose from “classic,” “18 renovated,” or “23 reimagined” versions, each offering same square footage with distinct decor and unique amenities which will satisfy loyal past guests as well as new to brand clientele.

It must be noted that the biggest change with Crystal’s relaunch is the guest capacity on each vessel. There is now more space than ever as these renovated ships have fewer cabins. On Symphony, to create more of the desired suites, guest capacity was reduced from 894 to just 606 (counted as double occupancy).

This brings the staff to guest ratio close to 1-on-1, thus positioning Crystal at the top of this luxury cruise metric.

Shipyard Fincantieri’s designers and engineers took the old staterooms freed up by fewer guests and combined them into new suites. One such category is the 645 SQF Junior Penthouse Siite category which is completely new. Spacious and bright, these mid-size suites are modern and sumptuous at the same time. Complete with 24-hour butler service, guests can relax and pamper themselves with impeccable service at their fingertips.

For those guest without the need or desire for a suite, standard ocean view and veranda rooms are also available as is a series of “solo traveler” cabins that do not require a supplement in cost. This ship offers lodging for all needs and desires in a cozy, yet elegant style.

So, you might wonder, what are the caveats I teased in the intro?
For one, even with all the enhanced elements, it cannot be denied that this vessel is close to 30 years old. Built in 95, she still presents well, aged a bit with wrinkles and occasional shudders from the hull. Secondly, the world didn’t stand still during the bankruptcy-induced break. Rivals launched new ships, they enhanced services, and client desire evolved to a point where Crystal picking up where they left off is no longer good enough.

I am confident that the talented team at Crystal, with support from the A&K family will gather around the table, unite, and push forward with the aim of retaking the pinnacle of luxury cruising helm in short order, they just are not quite there yet.
Wow! Quite a story. I hope Crystal will end up with flying colors.
Hugs, Julie
