Old vs New – Crystal Cruises – Korcula

Crystal Symphony in Korcula

24 hours at sea across the Adriatic from our Port of Fusina departure point, we arrived at the Croatian trade port of Korcula. Nestled on its own island’s southern tip, just 15 minutes across the straight from the Croatian mainland, this medieval gem happens to also be the documented place of origin for an individual that definitively changed the course of history.

Marko Polo’s routes of discovery

This individual is none other than world explorer Marko Polo. Yes, he was Venetian in a general sense as this town (founded in the early 12th century by the Venetians) was his family’s home town. In full transparency, it is not confirmed if he was actually born here, but he and his family did live and grow up in this charming trade route stopping point on the Dalmatian Coast.

Korcula from the “happy place bench”

Last time I visited this part of Croatia was in the late 80s right after the fall of communism during the post Yugoslavia days. A war and lots of changes since then, made Croatia into our modern day EU member state with tourism at its core of economic activity. Many of the hotels along the waterfront were built in “Soviet concrete bunker” style for officials and party members. Nowadays, they sprout colorful awnings, floral arrangements and with western investments, re-emerged as 4 and 5 * properties catering to US and European visitors. The transformation is amazing and well done. #visitCroatia

Medieval ramparts protect this charming town

Instead of joining the cruise line’s group excursion, I booked us a private guide whom gave us all the pertinent info and navigated us away from crowds. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day ashore. With a bit of luck on the weather front tonight, we may get to experience special fireworks for Crystal Symphony’s maiden call here today. For now, rain remains in the forecast which may ruin the party plans. Stay by tuned for more on this developing story…
