Queen Mary 2 – A Lesson in History

Queen Mary 2 – Sydney Noca Scotia

The stormy seas calmed overnight, our majestic vessel pulled into Sydney, Nova Scotia to partially cloudy skies. At first, you think we’ll “what is there to see in this tiny enclave?” On shore, within a few steps you realize this town serves as a vivid reminder of a turbulent time period of history we should learn from in today’s context.

Critical to the ultimate success of the Allied liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe, this town with its coal reserves and a steel mill contributed on outsized share to Western success. Building ships by the hundreds, staging convoys across the Atlantic; under constant threat of the German U-boots; this sleepy town grew ten-fold in population in short order in the early 40s. This growth helped in delivering on the promise of its strategic location and as a vital supply base.

Our stop here couldn’t have come at a more poignant time as we face global conflicts of a defining kind again with the war in Ukraine 🇺🇦 and the last 36 hours of turmoil in the Middle East.

This town reminds us of the sacrifice and determination that the people of the US and Canada made in the 40s to defeat Fascist regimes in Europe and , it may be demanded of us once again in the years to come. As oil bserve, Defying fascists must once again be a top priority as countries far and wide (including my adopted homeland) flirt with autocratic tendencies.
