One defining feature colors all Antarctica cruises – the famed Drake’s passage. This open ocean section presents some of the most challenging navigable waters on the planet. Treacherous winds, massive swells, and storm after storm passing through this natural funnel make it the most feared passage on the planet.

While we were incredibly fortunate with weather on our voyage overall, the Drake lived up to its reputation. 30foot swells, strong winds, and rain made it a challenging two day crossing. I view it as a badge of honor to have passed and survived it. Our 156 meter Silver Cloud navigated the passage with poise and everyone aboard got safely back to Puerto Williams.

Fortunately, our voyage only crossed the Drake once as our route took us east toward the Falklands first. For those of you nervous about big waves, this itinerary is ideal. If you wish to bypass the Drake entirely, lines like Silversea now also offer “fly bridge” cruises where guests fly to Antarctica before boarding their cruise. I’ll happily discuss Antarctica with anyone interested.
Planet Earth truly is amazing.
