Our overnight stay at an eco lodge was relaxing and cozy. A dinner buffet with farm grown lamb dishes, veggies and great desserts filled our tummies for a restful night sleep. While everyone rested, I was on aurora borealis watch. The sky did clear after midnight and conditions were improving but the night sky shifted westward away from our spot. No luck for the northern lights on our first try but we won’t give up.

First waterfall done, we traveled on to the visitor center of the famous volcano no one could pronounce back in 2010, when it stopped Northatlantic air travel for 10 weeks. A memory distant these days, yet quite dramatic still for the impact the locals felt.

From Eyafjallajokull, we traveled on to another stunning waterfall before we hit the black beach area. Hikes and scenic walks up and down the hills made for good physical activity for our group as well.

The world’s longest black sand beach with the basalt columns forming a natural cathedral said to be protected by native elves that play tricks on visitors, was our next stop. We were fortunate as the wind and waves were minima, making the conditions ideal for exploration. This is a magical place where you can feel the raw energy of our planet under your feet.

A short hop around tge rock formations of y he r black beach is the town of Vik where we stopped for lunch. Then we travelled on eastward on route 1 to the spectacular glacier area of Jokurslalon where our next adventure will take place after a good night rest at Gerdi lodge.
