Icelandic Adventure – Portal to the center of the earth

Troll land portal – Yule lads

Many of us grew up mesmerized by the novels of Jules Verne. Many of his imaginative works have been made into movies. One of the most famous stories, “The journey to the center of the earth” actually starts in Iceland where a so called “portal” supposedly exists out on the Snafelsness peninsula. Our journey took us to the very geographical area where this portal is supposed to be located.

Icelandic landscapes are so magical and diverse, it is no wonder then that you have seen it on the big screen, knowing or not. In fact, so many films and series have been shot in Iceland that a mix and match of locations is unavoidable. For example, the above pictured rock was in both, “Game of Thrones” and the Ben Stiller film “The secret life of Walter Mitty”. My opening photo of today’s blog at Troll Village, as well as the story of the Yule lads is essential to Will Ferrell’s 2020 Netflix movie “Eurovision Song Contest”.

Icelandic horses ready to ride

On our last lodging stop before our return to Reykjavik, we were afforded the options for a leisurely horseback ride. Half the group raised their hands and the othervhalf watched them gallop into the distance for a late afternoon expedition. Idyllic and iconic at the same time!

Farewell dinner at Apotek

A past morning of touring along the peninsula gave everyone the chance to experience Icelandic cold weather as tge last day was. By far the coldest and windiest we had. In a way, nature told us that time had come to wrap up and seal our memories of those amazing adventure in our hearts. What had become abundantly clear to me by now is that this magical destination had gotten under all our skins in some endearing form. We all departed the island secure in the knowledge that over the past 10 days, each of us had become an honorary Icelander.
