As the US Thanksgiving holiday is upon us, it is not only time to reflect on friendships and thankfulness, it is also a chance to explore a new destination in East Africa for a few days with great friends. While it may seem crazy to travel this far for only a few days, I view it as an opportunity to get a taste of a completely new area of the world and spend my birthday in an exotic place in the process. To be exact, we are actually celebrating two birthdays as Bill’s falls on Thanksgiving Day as well.

This trip fell into place sort of serendipitously late and on short notice with an opportunity from our supplier partner Globus to test a new program, use up my remaining American Airlines Aadvantage miles, and spend the Thanksgiving days outside the US as we used to do for years in the early 2000s. All good things indeed for a nomad travel geek like me! The reading of Hemmingway’s acclaimed shorts is another plus – on location no less.

While far distance wise, the logistics are quite easy. West Coast late afternoon departure to Doha overnight (15hr flight) and a short 4hr connection to Kilimanjaro Airport near Arusha, Tanzania et voila, here we are.
Stay tuned for the next few days as we explore this corner of the world. Enjoy!
