Africa Calling – Ngorongoro Crater

Our extraordinary journey through Tanzania continues with a spectacular drive up to and along the now dormant rim of the Ngorongoro Crater conservation area. This park and it’s surroundings are in many ways the cradle of human existence as the oldest ever found homo habilis fossils were found just 5 miles from the outside rim of the crater.

A truly extraordinary journey for our race was shaped right here, amidst the natural beauty of an extinct and collapsed volcano and the biodiversity of the natural world which is on full display.

Our full-day exploration by 4×4 under our guide Martin’s expert leadership was remarkable. From hyenas to jackals to lions the predators were ever present while their favorite prey of hippos, wildebeest, zebra, and Cape buffalo as well as tons of birds livened up the scene.

Weather during this short rain season was changeable with sunshine interrupted by torrential downpours that stop everyone in their tracks. Only the pelicans, flamingo, and hypos were happy about the wet.
