Africa Calling – Serengeti

Great migration all around us

One of the most amazing wildlife spectacles takes place here in the Serengeti where 1.8 million wildebeests migrate in a circular motion year-round. We were fortunate to pass through this magnificent experience for a 50 mile stretch where, as far as they eye can see, there are wildebeests grazing their way interspersed by dazzles of zebra. Cameras can’t really catch it but the emotions we all felt will stay with us forever.

Ever since childhood, the word “Serengeti” was synonymous with exotic beauty of wide open spaces filled with wild animals. In ways, I had always dreamed about coming here some day and the fact that I am privileged to be here now, over my birthday week is truly incredible. In the Swahili language, this exotic sounding word translates as “endless plain” which is quite apt except, there are far more trees and shrubs than I could have imagined. Those plants provide shade, safety, and serve as a food source (looking at you Giraffes) for countless species.

A Tower of Giraffes

It is hard to believe that after Tarangire and Ngorongoro parks, there would be more awe left in us and yet, our three days of exploration brought us the gift of nature’s bounty on so many levels. From our stay at the Kubu Kubu luxury camp at with its panoramic views over a grassy meadow to daily game drives with Martin as our “spotter” who brought us closer to the action, we were rewarded with amazing encounters.

Every day brought new heights of encounters with the “Big Five” knocked out quickly. From Hippos to Rhinos to Elephants, Cape buffalo and countless Prides of lions, we made quick progress. The more elusive cheetah and leopard took much more effort and time but we managed to spot and observe both big cats interspersed with plenty of other game and repeated Lion action.

Our tented lodge was an experience in of itself as the grounds are entirely exposed to nature with local Masai warriors the only defense against lions in the dark. I will say that his entire safari experience is not for the faint of heart but the reward for bravery is worth every minute and effort.

This Journey through Tanzania offers up a perfect balance of pace, biodiverse locations for exploration, good food and companionship as well as restful nights in comfy accommodations. It’s many ways, this was the “perfect” safari for our needs.
