Our ship stayed overnight at the port of Kobe which permitted us a full day private trip to nearby Kyoto – one of the most sacred places in Japan. The six of us met our guide and driver port side just before 9AM and we set off via the expansive freeway system to Kyoto.

After crossing the Moon bridge, we walked through the streets of Kyoto to the Tenryu-ji Tempke with its UNESCO Zen garden and giant bamboo forest. The meticulously arranged garden and pond area is a masterful example of the patience and perseverance Japanese clothes for its interactions with nature. Every detail has its purpose and tge scale is critical.

Well earned, we made a small detour for a special sweet treat – crème brûlée doughnuts! Yummy and creative!

The next highlight, sugar-free but nevertheless stunning in its 20 kilogram gold leave cover is the shrine at Kinkaku-ji. This venue was rather crowded but truly “zen” in its layout and setting. The walk through the complex was reflective and inspiring, adding to Kyoto’s appeal.

Our final stop for the day involved 1000 vermillion colored arches. Actually called the Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its vibrant torii gates that wind up a mountain. Again, overrun, yet spectacular to experience. Except for people of 6 feet as the Tori gates shrink in size and ducking becomes required, which ruins the fun.

Our day ended back on the ship in Lobe where all of us looked forward to putting our feet up for a bit. This program has us going every day with 20,000 + steps covered. Stay tuned for more adventures in Hiroshima and Takamatsu.
