My friends made their way to Nuremberg by train, while Jerry and I drove our manual geared Opel Astra wagon across German roads and (yes, a stretch of Autobahn) to the ship’ embarkaction point. Once aboard, we explored one of the most famous markets on the town square of Nuremberg.

One could say that once you saw a market, you have seen them all. The truth however is such that you one would miss all the local customs and treats only available geographically at specific locations and markets. One such treat is the German version of a hamburger called Frikadelle. This delicacy is not widely available outside of the Nuremberg area.

Beef, pork, egg, herbs, and seasonings are mixed with breadcrumbs for a soft, elegant texture. Steamed in beer and onions till the rendered fat browns it, this meat bite is in my opinion fat superior to American burgers. Served on a Kaiser roll with grilled onions and mustard, I was smiling ear to ear after each bite.

Stay tuned for more culinary and holiday cheer experiences along the main Danube canal over the coming days.
