Similar to tge Jones act which requires foreign flagged vessels to stop in a non-US port, our cruise around Japan required a stop in another country. Thus, the Azamara Pursuit pulled into port of Busan in South Korea. this stop presented the opportunity to check off another country from my “to do” list.

Little did we know how amazing our time ashore would be. From a spectacular (albeit cold) Azamazing evening of culture and folklore, to a spectacular temple and endless cherry blossoms, South Korea showed us what an exciting destination it truly is. Thanks to our excellent private guide Grace, we had insightful moments, education, and tasty treats to illustrate the diversity of this gem of a destination.

It started with delicious sweet treats of little red bean buns after the visit to tge royal dome tombs of Gyejodang. The mounds date as far back as 100AD and were erected to burry Silla kings of the ruling dynasty. Originally, this society was following Confucian beliefs with tombs filled with tools and personal items needed for the afterlife. Over time, by 300BC, it switched to Buddhist values which are eternal, thus no goodies needed for safe return to earth.

These tombs are spread by tge hundreds across the valley floor. Only a handful have been excavated so far and the South Korean government is heavily invested in carefully documenting the entire area.

After our enlightening visit to these tombs, we strolled through the historic downtown before making our way to the gardens of the former Royal palace. Another stunning experience with architectural precision in every beam and carving.

Our final stop for the day was the UNESCO site at the Bulguksa Temple. This sprawling hillside temple complex is a major site for locals and tourists alike.

All in all, a memorable day of exploration and eduction to bring this great culture alive. The drive aboard Grace’s Kia Carnival was luxurious and spacious. I recommend a private shore excursion at any time as it is often less costly than ship excursions and more fun.

Tomorrow, we go back to Japan with Nagasaki on the list. stay tuned for more.
We love Busan last June. Unfortunately, we rescheduled our trip to Japan. Chris’s leg has not healed and I developed a conditi
