Costa Rica – Adrenaline & Punta Cacique discovered

Sky Adventures Zip line – DLV group

As we woke up from a good night’s sleep, our bodies reminded us of yesterday’s adrenaline adventure above and through the thick Costa Rican rainforest canopy. Suspending almost 60 year old bodies on a tiny cable, descending 7 flights of cables, setting records with the longest reaching over 750 meters (2,460 feet!) and the highest at 200 meters (650 feet), all at thrilling speeds of up to 70 kmh take their toll. It was a total thrill, even with next day aches and stiffness factored in!

A quick warm up shower, a breakfast with delicious Costa Rican coffee and Arenal views later, our discovery journey continued with a scenic drive descending from the 4000+ feet at Arenal to sea level at a new development called Punta Cacique (nestled between the two charming villages of Hermosa and Coco).

Pool area and beach access

Called Waldorf Astoria Punta Cacique, this new build opened its doors in late April 2025 and overlooks magnificent Culebra Bay with Peninsula Papagayo across the inlet.  Designed in very modern (some would say “stark” style), this new luxury property drapes over a steep hillside, offering sea views from every room category and its private residences.

Lodging blocks on the hillside

Rooms are well appointed with all the modern amenities travelers look for these days.  Soft colors in light wood hues and marble complement the modern look.  Each unit features a terrace with a stylish tub and walk-out rain shower. Locally made edible delights awaited us in our room. Particularly palate pleasing were the guava jellies (dish center front) below.

Welcome treats in our room

Our stay of 2 nights offered enough time to get a good read on the property and to experience its offerings. a full body massage at the SPA the first afternoon helped to release the body tension from the 4 hr ride over speed bumps and twisty roads that brought us here from Arenal.

Boarding Delta Airlines on a walk up jet walk in Liberia – old style

As a lifelong Hilton loyalist and Waldorf Astoria fan, I as sad to say that this property did not impress in the usual Waldorf way. I left wanting more charm, warmth, and less cold and stark concrete. All in all however, Delta Vacations showcased their destination expertise in usual and exceptional fashion. You cannot go wrong with Costa Rica as a tropical getaway from winters up north. Pristine, incredibly clean, almost Swiss level quality (and prices), this destination is ideal for effortless fun in the sun!
