It’s busy meeting season as tropical locations hit the hot and humid times of year. A red-eye flight from San Francisco to Atlanta and onward to Liberia on Delta Airlines got our illustrious group of 16 travel agency representatives to the rainforest retreat for Delta Vacations at The Springs Resort and SPA in the town of La Fortuna by Arenal Volcano.

Our small group of Delta Vacations Diamond Elite agencies arrived at the property after a 3 ½ hour drive from Liberia Airport where we were warmly welcomed by the staff. One nice touch was that the front desk sent a check-in person to the motorcoach 40 minutes before arrival to go through all the check-in procedures while we finished the ride. This meant we could disembark the motorcoach and head straight to our rooms to relax and refresh after what was a rather long travel day. At first glance, the property seems overbuilt and out of proportion in relations to its natural surroundings. Once we understood from a talk by our local guide about the frequency of tremors stemming from nearby active Arenal Volcano, the extra thick walls and structures make perfect sense.

This property is built to resist natural forces and provide a safe and comfortable stay to explore the region with its many activities. Rated as a Virtuoso property, this resort is full of surprises; from its naturally intriguing wildlife; to the natural Hot Springs with varying temperatures from ranging from 85 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit; this carefully manicured property offers very spacious rooms; multiple dining venues; a swim-up bar with stunning views; and so much more to its guests.

Two nights were barely long enough to get a taste of all the programming available here. Breakfast is served daily on the main terrace and offers a buffet option with everything todays’ traveler requires, including some local specialty dishes and an incredible fresh local fruit selection. Local Costa Rican Coffee brewed to order complemented the offering.
I arrived with images of rugged rustic lodging in mind when I first heard of Arenal as our destination. I could not have been more wrong about the quality, options, and level of service on offer that make exploring the Arenal area a fantastic destination for even the most discerning travelers. This destination is mature, with great infrastructure, activities, and incredibly gracious locals.
