(Roam)ing in San Miguel – horses, gastronomy, art

San Miguel on horseback

Elevated to UNESCO world Heritage site in 2008, it’s the only such site that permits horseback riding through its cobblestone streets and plazas. Our afternoon excursion in groups of 12 was comprised of three stages, lasting over 3-hours which allowed us to see all of the beautiful spots in town.

Interspersed with cooking lesson and a stop at a local pub called “cantina” in Mexico, we learned all about the town’s illustrious history and lore. From a culinary perspective, discovering the family of nightshade veggies (including chili peppers) that are Indigenous to Central America, in new light was eye-opening for me.

Chilis aside, one of my highlights will forever be the luscious and creamy avocados found here (forget our Hass ones) that make the most delicious guacamole. From Al’s homemade version to fancy restaurant servings, I have yet to find one I don’t love. ❤️

But it doesn’t stop with guac, it’s merely the beginning of a culinary tour of amazing flavors, fresh farm ingredients, and libations of the agave type. Our five days in town were filled with incredible meals, a brunch, and sweets that make me want to return to San Miguel over and over again.

All this culinary knowledge is passed down by generations and reinvented with new influences from around the world. This is the magic of Mexican cuisine, meld sweet and sour, bitter and salty into palate pleasures of unrivaled imagination. Stay tuned for more.
